Sri Lanka, July 28 -- The People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has urged the government to hold long-overdue Provincial Council elections without further delay.
In a statement issued today, PAFFREL highlighted that the terms of the Provincial Councils expired on September 20, 2014-marking an 11-year gap without fresh elections. As per existing legislation, elections should be held every six years, yet successive governments have failed to initiate the required legal and administrative processes.
PAFFREL stressed that the delay has become a growing concern among the public and civil society organizations, who have repeatedly demanded the restoration of the electoral process at the provincial level.
