Sri Lanka, June 15 -- Agriculture Minister K.D. Lalkantha said legal amendments will be introduced allowing farmers to dispose off some animals such as giant squirrels in their cultivated lands as an act of pest control.

Remarking to the media in response to a query on the recent animal census, he said several recommendations have been made by the committee for the management of the wildlife population. He said it will be presented to the Cabinet for approval.

"We will have to amend the law in this regard. We may have to deal with some animals. For example, farmers will be allowed to eliminate giant squirrels on their lands as an act of pest control," he said.
