Srilanka, March 21 -- The nomination of a German woman who was set to contest the upcoming Local Government Elections in the Matale District has been rejected.

Area Election Officer Asiri Eranga told the Daily Mirror that the nomination was disqualified after officials found discrepancies in the birth certificate submitted by the candidate.

The woman, who had obtained Sri Lankan citizenship, made headlines as the first foreign national to enter a local election in Sri Lanka.

She had placed her deposit and intended to contest under an independent group for a seat in the Galewala Pradeshiya Sabha.
