Colombo, Sept. 24 -- Digital Economy Minister Eranga Weerarathne announced today that the government is planning to issue the Electronic National Identity Card (e-NIC) by the middle of next year.

Addressing the media, the Minister said the e-NIC will make it easier to verify a person's identity and will securely store biometric details.

He noted that once launched, the system is expected to curb online fraud, reduce the need for repeated document certification for government and private institutions, and provide stronger safeguards against online scammers.
