Srilanka, Feb. 11 -- The Hatton Forest Conservation Officer said efforts are underway to contain the fire that broke out in the Watawala Pinus Forest Reserve yesterday.
A group of individuals had set fire to the reserve near Hatton Oya, close to Watawala Railway Station and the road leading to Mountain Estate. Due to the dry weather, the fire had spread rapidly to the mountain peaks, destroying nearly 10 acres.
The Hatton Forest Conservation Office warned that the prevailing dry conditions on the western slopes of the central hills have led to deliberate forest fires.
Authorities urge anyone with information on those responsible to report it to the nearest police station or the Forest Conservation Office.
