Sri Lanka, Aug. 28 -- Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya revealed that organised crime in Sri Lanka had previously thrived due to political backing, but the dismantling of such support networks has driven many criminals out of the country.
"Once that political support disappeared, many of these criminals fled the country," the IGP said.
He said that the Sri Lanka Police are now working closely with international partners to apprehend suspects operating from abroad.
"We are coordinating with foreign missions to track and arrest wanted criminals currently hiding in countries such as India, Malaysia, Thailand, the UAE, Indonesia, Oman, Russia, Belarus, France and several other countries," he said.
