Srilanka, Jan. 28 -- The coconut triangle in the country risks turning into marshland in the near future due to the operation of illegal sand washing plants in the region.
Residents of the Thabbowa area in the Puttalam district have raised concerns over the establishment of these unauthorised plants. They emphasise that the land, which is highly suitable for farming, has been repurposed for large-scale sand washing activities.
The locals further allege that these operations persist with the backing of influential political leaders in the area.
