Colombo, April 16 -- Due to lower electricity usage during the holiday season, some changes were made on how power is generated in the country, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said.
On Friday, April 11, a 300 MW coal power unit was completely shut down at 9:57 p.m as less electricity was needed at night. Then on April 12 (Saturday), the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Plant, which was the only oil-powered plant running overnight, was shut down at 9:16 a.m. This plant runs on refinery Naphtha and was turned off to make way for solar power during the day.
Since then, no oil-powered plants have been used during daytime, showing a shift toward using more renewable energy like solar.
