Sri Lanka, July 30 -- The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has issued an urgent warning to the public about fraudulent schemes targeting WhatsApp users through fake calls and messages aimed at stealing One-Time Passwords (OTPs).

Police said cyber criminals are using unauthorised WhatsApp communications, including voice calls and deceptive text messages, to trick individuals into sharing their OTPs.

Once obtained, fraudsters gain full access to the victim's WhatsApp account, allowing them to impersonate the user and send fake messages to their contacts in an attempt to solicit money.

Accordingly, the CID has urged the public to remain vigilant, as such financial scams continue to emerge.
