Colombo, March 26 -- In line with the proposal submitted under the Budget 2025, the government has announced plans to provide an essential food package at a concessionary price during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival season.

According to the Cabinet decisions, the initiative aims to offer a 'timely food package' containing essential food items valued at Rs. 5,000 for only Rs. 2,500, easing the financial burden on deserving households.

The programme is expected to benefit selected individuals from a pool of 812,753 new applicants who have submitted applications with the intention of receiving the Aswesuma benefits.
