Manila, Nov. 4 -- For the first time in Sri Lanka's 165-year railway history, women will be allowed to apply for key operational positions such as Railway Engine Driver, Train Controller, Station Master, and Railway Supervisory Manager, following a Cabinet decision.

Since the establishment of the Sri Lanka Railways Department, these posts have been exclusively held by men. Female officers were recruited only for supervisory roles in 2012 and 2015.

In line with the government's new economic policies promoting gender equality and inclusion in the public sector, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved, in principle, the recruitment of women to these roles under the powers granted by Article 55 (1) of the Constitution.
