Sri Lanka, Nov. 25 -- The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to immediately terminate the issuance of new licenses for terrestrial analogue television channels in Sri Lanka.
Addressing the media, Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) will now oversee the allocation of frequencies from the spectrum for terrestrial television operations.
"At present, 24 television channels, including five state-owned stations, operate in the country under licenses issued to 16 institutions using the existing terrestrial analogue technology," the minister noted.
