Dhaka, Feb. 14 -- In 14 of Chattogram's 16 constituencies where election results have been declared, 59 candidates have forfeited their security deposits.

Of the 115 candidates, 98 ran in these 14 constituencies, with 60 percent of them losing their security deposits in the parliamentary polls.

In accordance with Article 41(1) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), deposits are forfeited if the candidate fails to secure one-eighth of the total votes cast.

"As such, many candidates in Chattogram's 16 parliamentary seats will lose their security deposits this time," said Chattogram's Additional Regional Election Officer Mohammed Shakawat Hossain.

"These forfeited funds will be deposited into the government treasury," he added....
