New York, June 19 -- : Some 2.2 billion people around the world do not have access to safely managed drinking water services, while 4.2 billion people lack access to safely managed sanitation services, according to a new report by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

In addition, around three billion people worldwide lack basic handwashing facilities.

The report -- 'Progress on drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene, 2000-2017: Special focus on inequalities' -- reveals that while 1.8 billion people have gained access to basic drinking water services since 2000, there remain vast inequalities in the accessibility, availability, and quality of these services.
