Indonesia, Aug. 30 -- South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman called for calm on Saturday after protests in Makassar escalated into riots that left four people dead and the local parliament buildings burned.

"There are fatalities. I urge everyone to remain calm. Let us ensure a safe and peaceful South Sulawesi," Sulaiman said in Makassar.

The governor met with hundreds of protesters on Friday evening (Aug 29) to hear their grievances and expressed hope the dialogue would ease tensions.

"We all love this region. Let us maintain the peace, respect each other, and preserve our unity for a better South Sulawesi," he remarked.
