Jakarta, Aug. 5 -- Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has said that his ministry will assist North Jakarta in stepping up waste management efforts as the city has been designated a model for other regions in the country.

"I have a big hope for North Jakarta, which has been designated as one of the barometer cities of waste management in this country," he said at the "Environmental Generation Commitment Declaration" event here on Tuesday.

North Jakarta has been chosen as a model since it produces approximately 8 thousand tons of waste per day.

Most of this waste remains unmanaged and ends up at the Bantargebang Landfill. Its volume has now reached 55 million tons-about the height of a 20-story building.
