Jakarta, June 27 -- Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar has called on Indonesian Muslims to observe the 1447 Islamic New Year as an opportunity for comprehensive self-reflection and improvement, covering spiritual, intellectual, and social aspects.

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar starts with the month of Muharram and was established in 622 CE to commemorate the Hijrah, or the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina.

Speaking at a Hijri New Year national commemoration event at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on Thursday night (June 26), Umar emphasized that the Hijrah was not merely a physical journey but a major turning point that symbolized the transition from darkness to enlightenment.
