Jakarta, Sept. 2 -- The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) called on police to prioritize restorative justice for protesters detained in several regions over demonstrations against lawmakers' allowances.

Komnas HAM also urged law enforcement to provide legal aid to those arrested and detained, stressing that access to legal counsel is a fundamental human right.

"Many of those detained, according to reports from civil society groups, have no access to legal assistance. Komnas HAM is urging the police to uphold restorative justice," Komnas HAM Chair Anis Hidayah said at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.
