Jakarta, Sept. 16 -- Jakarta will overhaul dozens of traditional markets and expand digital payment systems to lift trade and address long-standing sanitation and safety problems, Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said on Tuesday.

Pramono said only part of the city's 153 markets have been modernized, leaving many in disrepair.

Revitalization would make the facilities cleaner, safer and more accessible, he said after meeting traders in East Jakarta.

The governor said digitalization would also be expanded after pilot projects in Santa and Mayestik markets boosted transactions by 47 percent in a recent competition among 12 markets.
