Jakarta, Sept. 1 -- The Jakarta Metropolitan Police appealed to residents of Jakarta and its surrounding areas to remain calm after the tension following days of unrest in the capital.

"We ask the people to remain calm and not to worry. We are here among the people and we are ready to provide protection and security," Jakarta police chief, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, stated during an evening roll call at the Parliament Complex on Sunday.

However, Suheri also called on the people to play their part in maintaining a conducive situation in Jakarta, including by reporting potential disruption to public security and order to local police leaders.
