Jakarta, Jan. 19 -- The revision of the Election Law by the House of Representatives (DPR) will not alter the direct method of the presidential election, DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad has stated.

The assurance was given in response to public concern that law revision would return the authority to elect the president from the people to the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), a system that was in place before 2004.

"We agreed that (deliberations on) the Election Law will not touch upon the presidential election by the MPR," Ahmad stated in a joint press statement with the State Secretary Minister at the Parliament Complex here on Monday.
