Jakarta, July 18 -- Consumers in Indonesia are entitled to compensation if rice products they purchase are substandard or underweight compared to what is stated on the packaging, a trade official said on Friday.

Moga Simatupang, Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Compliance, said the right to compensation is guaranteed under Law No. 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection.

"Article 4 outlines consumer rights, including the right to comfort, security, and safety in consumption; the right to choose products; access to accurate information; the right to be heard; and the right to education," he said.

"These also include the right to be treated fairly and honestly, and the right to receive compensation," he added.
