Jakarta, Dec. 17 -- Indonesia's Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Mukhtarudin has stressed the importance of financial literacy to encourage migrant workers to manage their income more productively.

He said on Tuesday financial education aims to help migrant workers make wiser financial decisions.

He noted that around 70 percent of remittances sent home by Indonesian migrant workers are still used for consumptive purposes, while only 30 percent are allocated to productive activities.

"Our goal is to reverse this pattern so migrant workers can use their earnings for productive business activities," he said, according to a statement from his ministry.
