Jakarta, Nov. 11 -- Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is expanding its weather and maritime radar network to strengthen early warnings of extreme weather in coastal areas and waters nationwide.
During a hearing with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Tuesday, BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani said that new radar installations are under construction in four provinces: Central Kalimantan, North Sumatra, Riau Islands, and Bali.
"Maritime radar is the backbone of monitoring heavy rain, strong winds, and high waves that endanger shipping," he said.
