Jakarta, July 10 -- The Indonesian government aims to lead regional efforts in developing biodegradable plastics by adopting biotransformation technology, according to Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita.
"Such technology offers a concrete solution to the problems caused by plastic waste, particularly single-use plastics. With this eco-friendly approach, Indonesia has the potential to become a regional pioneer in the development and use of biodegradable plastics," he said in a statement on Thursday.
Biotransformation technology uses living organisms to break down plastic materials quickly, leaving behind no microplastics or toxic residues. Its application also enables industries to either recycle or decompose waste as needed.
