Jakarta, April 22 -- Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono paid his respects to the late Pope Francis at the Vatican Embassy (Apostolic Nunciature) in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The passing of the Pope, who set a great example of compassion and peace, is a profound loss for the world, the minister said.

"Pope Francis was a prominent figure of love, moral integrity, support for peace, and solidarity with the poor and marginalized," Sugiono added.

In the condolence book, he wrote that Pope Francis' visit to Indonesia last year would always be remembered as a moment of hope and unity for Indonesia and the world.
