Jakarta, Feb. 12 -- Indonesia's Supreme Court (MA) has proposed that the draft bill amending Law Number 8 of 1981 on the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) include provisions to expedite trials for criminal offenses carrying sentences of less than seven years in prison.

The proposal would apply if a defendant admits to all charges after the indictment is read. The case would then proceed through the usual judicial process by a panel of judges, simplifying case registration.

"Provided the trial is conducted swiftly, such as by limiting its duration," said Prim Haryadi, chairperson of the MA Criminal Chamber, during a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Wednesday.
