Jakarta, May 13 -- The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has pegged the potential value of illegal drug transactions in Indonesia at Rp524 trillion (around US$31.7 billion) per year.

According to the BNN's main secretary, Inspector General of Police, Tantan Sulistyana, drug abuse in Indonesia has become an increasingly threatening, worrying, and complex issue that needs to be addressed without delay.

"Therefore, we plan to strengthen resources and infrastructure to more optimally handle drugs," he informed during a meeting with National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
