Jakarta, Nov. 12 -- Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has been expanding its weather and maritime radar network to strengthen early warnings of extreme weather in coastal areas and waters nationwide, according to its head Teuku Faisal Fathani. Addressing a hearing with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on November 11, Fathani said that new radar installations are under construction in Central Kalimantan and North Sumatra provinces, Riau Islands, and Bali. The programme forms part of the Maritime Meteorological System 2 (MMS2), which will run until 2027, targeting 17 active radar units across the Southeast Asian nation.
