ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 23 -- United States Patent no. 12,368,400, issued on July 22, was assigned to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (Madison, Wis.).

"Sensing rotor displacement using stator power winding" was invented by Nathan Petersen (Madison, Wis.) and Eric Severson (Middleton, Wis.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A rotating electrical machine (motor or generator) includes a controller evaluating rotor displacement using a combined winding that also provides for torque coupling to the rotor through the use of a model relating rotor offset to at least one of resistance, inductance, or back-EMF measured through a combined winding."
