ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 10 -- United States Patent no. 12,290,562, issued on May 6, was assigned to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) (Madison, Wis.).

"Recombinant multivalent influenza viruses" was invented by Yoshihiro Kawaoka (Middleton, Wis.) and Gabriele Neumann (Madison, Wis.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The invention provides a composition useful to prepare influenza vaccine viruses, e.g., in the absence of helper virus, which includes internal viral segments from an influenza virus vaccine strain or isolate, e.g., one that is safe in humans, for instance, one that does not result in significant disease, and encodes a heterologous antigen."
