ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 12 -- United States Patent no. 12,247,196, issued on March 11, was assigned to Washington University (St. Louis).

"Engineered microorganisms and methods of making and using same" was invented by Gautam Dantas (St. Louis), Suryang Kwak (St. Louis) and Herbert Virgin (St. Louis).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present disclosure provides for engineered microorganisms and methods of making and using same. The engineered microorganisms as described herein can have a surface display and can be useful as therapeutic agents (e.g., sponges) and biosensors."

The patent was filed on Sept. 20, 2019, under Application No. 17/278,027.
