ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 9 -- United States Patent no. 12,492,388, issued on Dec. 9, was assigned to Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Boston).
"Materials and methods for treatment of hemoglobinopathies" was invented by Tirtha Chakraborty (Cambridge, Mass.) and Bibhu Prasad Mishra (Wakefield, Mass.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Materials and methods for treating a patient with hemoglobinopathy, both ex vivo and in vivo and materials and methods for deleting at least a portion of a human beta globin locus on chromosome 11 in a human cell by genome editing and thereby increasing the production of fetal hemoglobin (HbF)."
