ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 30 -- United States Patent no. 12,374,709, issued on July 29, was assigned to UPSTART POWER INC. (Southborough, Mass.).

"Sofc-conduction" was invented by Nathan Palumbo (West Boylston, Mass.), Paul Osenar (Boxborough, Mass.), Matthew Otis (Allston, Mass.) and James Pilczak (Grafton, Mass.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system includes high thermal conductivity materials such as copper to increase thermal energy transfer by thermal conduction. The copper is protected from oxidation by nickel electroplating and protected from thermal damage by providing oxidation resistant liners inside combustion chambers."
