ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,331,064, issued on June 17, was assigned to University of Southern California (Los Angeles).

"Tandem carbene phosphors" was invented by Tian-Yi Li (Los Angeles), Peter I. Djurovich (Long Beach, Calif.) and Mark E. Thompson (Anaheim, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Tandem carbene phosphors such as those of Formula I can act as electron acceptors in tandem to increase the energy separation between the ground and excited state, which is higher than those found in analogous monometallic complexes. These compounds should find application as luminescent materials in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs)."
