ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 13 -- United States Patent no. 12,521,190, issued on Jan. 13, was assigned to The Penn State Research Foundation (University Park, Pa.).

"Extemporaneous route planning during live endoscopic surgical procedures" was invented by William E. Higgins (State College, Pa.), Yuxuan He (State College, Pa.), Vahid Daneshpajooh (Swarthmore, Pa.) and Qi Chang (State College, Pa.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A methodology is for deriving a guidance route to any selected site including an unplanned ROI site observed in a radiologic imaging view or endoscopic video view on an assisted-endoscopy system during a live surgical endoscopic procedure based on a preloaded initial procedure...
