ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 28 -- United States Patent no. 12,455,402, issued on Oct. 28, was assigned to The MITRE Corp. (McLean, Va.).

"Implanting photonic crystals into polymers" was invented by Carl Giller (Arlington, Va.) and Robert Latham (Springfield, Va.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Disclosed herein are embodiments of photonic crystals implanted into polymers to create durable, flexible structures that can respond to a series of external stimuli for sensing applications. Also disclosed are method embodiments of fabricating such photonic crystals."
