ALEXANDRIA, Va., Nov. 18 -- United States Patent no. 12,472,475, issued on Nov. 18, was assigned to The General Hospital Corp. (Boston).

"Methods of supercooling aqueous samples" was invented by Osman Berk Usta (Swampscott, Mass.), Haishui Huang (Allston, Mass.) and Martin Yarmush (Newton, Mass.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "This disclosure relates to methods of super-cooling of aqueous samples with or without biological samples. The methods involve, e.g., providing a container comprising the aqueous sample; applying an immiscible liquid phase of sufficient thickness to separate the aqueous sample from air; and cooling the aqueous sample to a temperature that is below 0deg C."
