ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 9 -- United States Patent no. 12,285,851, issued on April 29, was assigned to Snap-on Inc. (Kenosha, Wis.).

"Impact mechanism for a hammer tool" was invented by Joshua M. Beer (Kenosha, Wis.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An impact mechanism for an impact tool that includes a housing, a piston slidably disposed in the housing and adapted to transfer impact force to a tool bit, and electromagnetic coils disposed between the piston and the housing. The electromagnetic coils are alternately activated to generate respective magnetic fields to cause the piston to move within the housing."
