ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 16 -- United States Patent no. 12,363,427, issued on July 15, was assigned to Snap Inc. (Santa Monica, Calif.).

"Image-capture control" was invented by Matthew Hanover (Los Angeles), Justin Huang (Los Angeles) and David Meisenholder (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "In a camera-enabled electronic device, photo capture is triggered by a press-and-hold input only if the holding duration of the press-and-hold input is greater than a predefined threshold duration. A press-and-hold input shorter in duration than the threshold triggers video capture. Thus, a short press triggers video capture, while a long press triggers photo capture."
