According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A method, system and tool for determining the wear state of a component of a continuous flow engine. The method includes determining multiple types of oxidation layers and their properties, wherein the oxidation layers originate from the same material of the component, and diagnosing the wear state of the component by utilizing the properties of the oxidation layers."
