ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,253,382, issued on March 18, was assigned to SeeScan Inc. (San Diego).

"Vehicle-based utility locating using principal components" was invented by Mark S. Olsson (La Jolla, Calif.), Paul Wisecaver (San Diego) and Samantha Crane-Solis (San Marcos, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present disclosure is directed to vehicle-based systems for locating and mapping buried utility lines using principal components. Vehicle-based utility locating devices receive magnetic field signals emitted by utility lines and, with determined position data, implement principal component analysis to locate and map the utility lines."
