ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 5 -- United States Patent no. 12,276,721, issued on April 15, was assigned to Seamatica Aerospace Ltd. (St. John's, Canada).

"Method and apparatus for determining a position of an airborne vehicle using secondary surveillance radars as beacons" was invented by Siu Donald O'Young (St. John's, Canada) and Yake Li (Ottawa).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Methods and systems are disclosed for determining a spatial position of an aircraft, without replying on measurements from the Global Positioning System. Various embodiments are described using a single Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR), and multiple SSRs."
