"Internally cooled brush seal backing plate and method" was invented by Christopher Peterson (Roanoke, Ill.) and Howard J. Liles (Newington, Conn.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A cooled brush seal for use with a CMC component of a gas turbine engine having a hot side exposed to a hot gas path and an opposing side having a cavity for feeding a cooling flow to at least one film cooling hole.
