ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,330,310, issued on June 17, was assigned to REALTIME ROBOTICS INC. (Boston).

"Collision detection useful in motion planning for robotics" was invented by William Thomas Floyd-Jones (Boston), Sean Michael Murray (Cambridge, Mass.), George Dimitri Konidaris (Boston) and Daniel Jeremy Sorin (Boston).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Collision detection useful in motion planning for robotics advantageously employs data structure representations of robots, persistent obstacles and transient obstacles in an environment in which a robot will operate. Data structures may take the form of hierarchical data structures ((e.g., octrees, sets of volumes ...
