ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 26 -- United States Patent no. 12,261,033, issued on March 25, was assigned to Quest Diagnostics Investments LLC (Secaucus, N.J.).

"Apolipoprotein e isotype detection by mass spectrometry" was invented by Darren Weber (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Nigel Clarke (Vista, Calif.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Provided are methods for determining the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) phenotype in a sample by mass spectrometry; wherein the ApoE allele(s) present in the sample is determined from the identity of the ions detected by mass spectrometry. In another aspect, provided herein are methods for diagnosis or prognosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia."
