ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 16 -- United States Patent no. 12,309,401, issued on May 20, was assigned to QUALCOMM Inc. (San Diego).

"Rice parameter derivation for high bit-depth video coding" was invented by Dmytro Rusanovskyy (San Diego) and Marta Karczewicz (San Diego).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A video coder determines of shift values based on the dynamic range of a sum of absolute values of neighboring transform coefficients. The shift value may then be used to extend possible values of a Rice parameter used to binarize a syntax element related to a currently coded transform coefficient."
