ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 19 -- United States Patent no. 12,331,336, issued on June 17, was assigned to Morgan State University (Baltimore).
"Engineered cyanobacteria with enhanced UV tolerance" was invented by Viji Sitther (Pikesville, Md.) and Samson Gichuki (Nottingham, Md.).
According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A recombinant strain of F. diplosiphon was made by transforming wild type F. diplosiphon with a pGEM-7Zf (+) plasmid containing the photolyase gene (phrA) via electroporation. The recombinant strain was designated B481-ViAnSa and overexpressed the phrA gene to result in enhanced UV tolerance compared to wild type F. diplosiphon."
