ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 26 -- United States Patent no. 12,259,242, issued on March 25, was assigned to LEICA GEOSYSTEMS AG (Heerbrugg, Switzerland).

"Laser tracker-based surveying system with inertial measurement unit" was invented by Markus Steiner (Granichen, Switzerland), Tomasz Kwiatkowski (Moosleerau, Switzerland) and Johan Stigwall (St. Gallen, Switzerland).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The invention relates to a laser tracker-based surveying system having a measurement aid which comprises an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The surveying system is designed to determine coordinates of points of a surface which are sampled by means of the measurement aid."
