ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 23 -- United States Patent no. 12,421,476, issued on Sept. 23, was assigned to International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (New York).

"Gel candles" was invented by Jason Geno (Morganville, N.J.), Joseph Brain (Colts Neck, N.J.), Nicole Giffin (Holmdel, N.J.) and Tamara Wynn Hopkins (Jersey City, N.J.).

According to the abstract* released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Disclosed are candles having a wick, a wax composition, and a gel composition, wherein the wax composition encloses the wick, and the wick is separated from the gel composition. The candle while being burned exhibits one or more desirable properties, such as reduced levels of soot or reduced emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)."
